Cyclist on new active travel route by Scottish Canals

Cyclist riding along new smooth cobbles

“The smoother connection here has made a big difference. We’ve been watching it develop because rattling over old cobbles with a pram on the canal wasn’t working. And for cyclists it’s much safer. I will walk up here to work as well, as I go back. It’s a big help and I think it’s good for the canal as well.”

The Fountainbridge Towpath project has breathed new life into a neglected stretch of the historic Union Canal walkway with quality natural paving and increased provision of services for boaters. A Scottish Canals project, part-funded by Sustrans has enhanced usability of the canalside for both walkway and canal users.

BEFORE

Replacement of wonky cobbles with new

Uneven cobbles and various depression along the towpath made this section of the National Cycle Route 75 undesirable to use. As the neighbourhood continues grow with various large residential developments it is important for this thoroughfare to be recognised and used as such. The new Whinstone Sett paving offers a smooth surface which is divided by a central kerb to give pedestrians and cyclists space – this will be carried through in future phases.

Sensitive lighting has been installed which only illuminates fully when activated by motion sensors to balance the needs of canal wildlife and people using the route. The increased provision of water and power points improves facilities for boats to moor here.

New lighting columns along route towards Leamington Lift Bridge.

New planting adjacent to active travel route.

Planting now adorns the towpath as the neighbouring Vastint development nears completion, a landscape which we have designed. This splash of colour will follow through the development and down the future terrace link to Dundee Street. Within this project seating will offer Towpath users a quiet place to pause surrounded by foliage. Future projects, including Leamington Square, will continue to enhance the canalside for the growing community.
